The President's Commission on Race and Ethnicity (PCORE) and the Office of Equal Opportunity Programs (EOP) assist professional staff and junior faculty of color with career development by providing grants to help cover the costs to attend professional conferences or training. The Professional Development Fund (PDF) began in 1982 as the Minority Faculty Conference. The Fund’s original purpose was to enhance the opportunities for minority tenure-track faculty to gain tenure.
Today, the Fund awards grants to professional staff and administrators as well as non-tenured, tenure-track faculty. Applicants from racial and ethnic minorities are encouraged to apply. U.S. citizens, permanent residents, and green card holders receive priority consideration. The PDF grants may be used to help pay the costs to attend a training class, a conference, and/or professional meeting that could enhance the applicant’s skills and possibilities for advancement. The average award distributed in past years has been $200-$500. Grant funds are distributed as reimbursement to actual conference or training expenses based on original receipt(s).
The recommended criteria for awards are outlined below:

The nature of the conference or training should be related to the recipient’s employment and/or field of teaching responsibilities within the University and should enhance the visibility of the University in the academic or professional community.

Priority consideration and basis for the awards will be judged on:

Persons presenting a paper (in recipient’s area of employment or field of endeavor).

Persons serving as a panelist or moderator of a panel.

Persons serving as a major officer of a professional organization, association, or commission (i.e. president, chair, secretary, treasurer, etc.).

Persons attending a professional development training or seminar that will enhance their current skill set relevant to their current position at the university.
- Priority consideration will be given to those who previously have not received an award. Length of employment at Emory will be considered.
- Recipients must submit a one-page summary of their conference/paper presentation and/or training to PCORE. They may be called upon to make a presentation of their participation to PCORE in the fall. Whenever possible should publish a summary in a campus news media, highlighting receipt of an award from PCORE. Copies of the publication should be provided to the PCORE Commission.
- This award covers conferences/training during Fiscal Year 2011-2012.
